Spring Color Guided Walk

Saucer Magnolia

Take a self-guided walk to see the spring flowering trees. Or join the Arboretum’s founder Jim Gersbach for a free guided tree walk on Saturday, April 16. Meet at 9 a.m. on the corner of NE 30th and Ainsworth diagonally opposite the Ainsworth United Church of Christ. Expect about 90 minutes of enjoyable tree exploration along Ainsworth!

On the Arboretum, you can find trees flowering from March to May. The general progression through the season is roughly as follows:

  • Late March: Flowering plums

  • Late March, early April: Deciduous magnolias

  • Late April: Cherries, redbuds, apples, crabapples, eastern dogwoods, dove tree

  • May: Kousa dogwoods, hawthorns

  • Late May: Snowbells, yellowoods

Note that warmer, sunny weather can cause early flowering, just as late cold snaps can delay flowering. Also note that yellowwood trees bloom heavily one year and may hardly bloom at all the next.

To find the trees:

Tree icons on the interactive Linear Arboretum map are color coded to make it easier to zoom in on the ones that interest you.  The pink tree icons are trees that bloom with showy flowers in spring - from March to the end of May.
